“I heard some commotion at around three in the morning but I didn’t know what it was until I heard the worst sound ever,” Jeremy said. “It only took a second for me to realize that was Brian throwing up.” In all of our years of travel, Brian and I have been incredibly lucky about avoiding ill-health situations. No malaria, dysentery, Montezuma’s Revenge or any other serious ailment, until now. I woke up early, like usual, but this time found Brian awake before me and curled over the toilet throwing up. I had slept through his nighttime onset of ‘death next to a toilet’ and had no idea he was even sick.

The Lure of the Pan-American (Part 2)

The following morning we were off, without a hitch. We were slated to drive from San Jose, Costa Rica to the Northern Nicaraguan town of Estelí, where we would meet with a friend of a friend who had a place to stay set up for us. This is often the case when traveling abroad on small budgets—we look for friends and connections, and are not shy on asking for a place to lay our heads. We have learned that it is better to make friends along the way than pay money to stay in a hotel. So wherever possible, we try to plan ahead and look for somebody who knows somebody who has an extra sofa or extra hammock. It remains thoroughly surprising to me how willing people are to let total strangers sleep on their sofa, especially strangers as hairy and shady-looking as we are.

The Lure of the Pan-American (Part 1)

Pijijiapan, Mexico was yet to awake. The still of the lifeless corridors throughout the slumbering city helped motivate our quick departure and, at that early hour, only the faint hum of the Scania tractor-trailers hibernating next to the highway could be heard. The heat and leftover humidity beckoned us to shower our filthy and grease-ridden selves—we passed. There was driving to be done, and kilometers to go. At 4:30am, I woke up the crew, loaded the car and started the day’s journey North, not knowing how far we would make it.
